Gert Hekma teaches gay and lesbian studies at Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam and chairs its BA-program Gender, Sexuality and Culture.  His research is in the field of gay history, sociology and anthropology.  He has edited several collections, with Kent Gerard The Pursuit of Sodomy (1989), with Harry Oosterhuis and James D. Steakley Gay Men and the Sexual History of the Political Left (1995), with Franz Eder and Lesley Hall Sexual Cultures in Europe (2 volumes, 1999) and others in Dutch. His Homoseksualiteit in Nederland van 1730 tot de moderne tijd, published in 2004, is now being translated into English.  He has also written on the medicalization of homosexuality, on "perversions", and on literary topics such as the Marquis de Sade, Francois Augieras and Dutch gay novels.
