Sexology in the late nineteenth century was dominated by biological approaches to the "sexual perversions." The hereditary degeneration model was usually the foundation for these organic aetiologies. After a lengthy period when psychoanalytic models predominated, biological explanations again dominate scientific and popular discourses on sexual orientation, transsexualism, and intersexes. This talk examines the genetic theories of sexuality from both fins-de-siècles and the social, cultural, and scientific forces leading to their ascendancy.
