The Centre for the History of European Discourses was incorporated in the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in August 2015.

In part II, 1st act, scene: "Lustgarten", the alchemist & charlatan Faust appears as juggler in currencies, stocks & shares, as financial wizard at the imperial court, ur-speculators of modern economic history. The scene is based historically on John Law, the Scotsman who invented the share-, options- & futures system to protect the French kings after Louis XIV. from bankruptcy. The lecture will track the figure of 'speculator' from 18th century France until the present.
